Abstract
Mary Cassatt, born American in 1844, growing up on traditional painting in Pennsylvania Academy, made Paris her home and gained fame among the fellow Impressionists, Monet, Degas, and Renoir in France. She painted with tender feeling and impressionistic technique and took motherhood and infancy for her favorite themes, while developing a highly individual style inspired on Japanese prints. As a versatile artist, she made oil, pastel, aquatint paintings and prints. Her artistic achievement acknowledged, she was made a chevalier of the Legion of Honour of France in 1904. The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts awarded Cassatt the gold Medal of Honour in 1914.
