Abstract
It is often a matter of controversy as to what is the most effective technique of raising a child to be a balanced bilingual by the age of seven. In this thesis, I will offer a deep insight into the various methods and strategies a family can apply during their child's bilingual language development. I will present the advantages and disadvantages of all the six possible types of bilingual acquisition within a family circle. Using the accounts of various linguists, language teachers, and bilingual adults as part of the bilingual families, I will demonstrate that positive results can be achieved by emphasising the consistency and maintainance of both languages to nearly the same degree. Finally, I will prove the prevailing success rate of the 'non-dominant home language without community support' technique.
