Abstract
The purpose of the present dissertation is to investigate when and to what extent L1 can be used during the English lesson. In section 1 relevant literature discussing the benefits and reasons for using L1 is presented after a brief summary of the history of language teaching methods. Section 2 describes a research carried out in a Primary School. The recording and the questionnaire will be described as well. The results gathered during the research will be analysed and illustrated by means of diagrams and tables in Section 3. A detailed analysis of the questionnaire will be found in section 4. Section 5, the last part of the dissertation, contains a general conclusion which could be drown from the outcome of the present research.
