Abstract

This thesis examines the importance of silence in the Amish way of life. It also emphasizes the significance of separation from the world which enables the practice of silent discourse. We can discover how silence is interwoven in the everyday Amish life and how it raises some problems in relationships within their communities. Silence is such an integral part of the Amish communities that if they were to break this silence, the Amish community would fall apart.
