Abstract
The present trend in second language teaching puts great emphasis on the improvement of students' speaking skills. As there is mostly a one-to-one correspondence between pronunciation and spelling in Hungarian, and it is not true in English, teaching pronunciation is a very important part of language teaching. There are two key problems with pronunciation teaching. Firstly, it tends to be neglected. And secondly, when it is not neglected, teachers do not know how to teach it. The first part of the thesis deals with the main features of English pronunciation. One crucial point is to learn how to produce the sounds of the language. I present 10 methods and techniques, suitable for all learners, which could be used in lessons, besides the old, traditional repetitive technique and listening to tapes. I made up a set of questions for teachers. The questionnaires were given all English teachers who teach in Cegléd. In the last part of the thesis, several compact disks were analysed.
