Abstract
Reading belongs to the main four reading skills along with writing, speaking, and listening which give the basic principles of language learning. Of course, there is a wide choice of reading passages which can help students acquire English as a foreign language. In this thesis I examine the importance of intensive reading (reading in the classroom). I make evidence that intensive reading can make the lesson. interesting and useful. It can be used for the improvement of vocabulary and knowledge. The text as a starting point makes the students communicate and think in the target language. The success of intensive reading can be attained by comprehension tasks because they draw the students' attention to particular parts of the text. My thesis involves two main parts. In the first part I expound the theoretical background of intensive reading. In the second part I put theory into practice, which means that I did a research experiment with eleven of my students. I introduced eight intensive reading texts with comprehension to them and I compiled a questionnaire based on these eight texts. Having completed the exercises, the students expressed their impressions and satisfaction with the exercises through the questionnaire. At the beginning of part II, I introduce the eight chosen texts and the group of students who take part in the experiment. Finally, I analyse the research and examine how theory can be used in practice. In the conclusion I summarize the main theoretical and practical points of intensive reading.
