Abstract
My thesis focuses on gothic literature, what effect it had and still has on today's music. Then, I will present how literature affected the lyrics of gothic metal music and what similarities can be traced between the two genres. I will prove that gothic novels inspired contemporary musicians to express their feelings the same way and to write in the same manner like gothic novelists did in the late 18`hcentury, and I will also show, by analysing the texts, that not only the names of the two genres are similar but their atmosphere as well. To support my thesis statement I will present evidences by a comparative analysis of the characteristic features of both gothic literature and the lyrics of modern gothic metal music. I have the intention of giving a full picture of the mysteries, the horror and the significance of them appearing in literature.
