Abstract

This thesis examines the social and political changes in the United States of America in the 1960s and their influence on the music ofthe period. I will prove that rock music ofthe 1960s in America was not just a form of entertainment but it was music with a message. Using books and websides about this period, different musicians and songs, I will demonstrate that music mirrors the social tension ofthe era with using current issues as topics in the songs. In addition, I will analyse different lyrics from the sixties to show unambiguous examples for this.
