Abstract
In my thesis I examine the importance of songs and rhymes in the lower primary English language teaching. I made a hypothesis that teachers can improve children's physical and cognitive development through songs and rhymes. I would like to point out that songs and rhymes help children to learn the chunks of language and they are a great help for teachers in classroom management, motivating and practising certain grammatical patterns and vocabulary. Finally I examined some available lower primary course books from the point of view of songs and rhymes. By the end of my thesis it can be seen how songs and rhymes help language teaching and teachers can use them in a lot of ways and for different reasons in their lessons.
