Abstract
This thesis wants to find an answer to the question whether it was 'the faith' of the protagonist Jocelin, of a mystic that managed to build the Spire against any reason in Golding's work. With the description of the basic features of mysticim, the definition who is a mystic and how to reach a mystical state I create the background for the examination. Throughout the thesis I line up the arguments why the dean after seeing the vision feels to be a mystic and what signs show into that direction. I highlight that nevertheless the difficulties coming from the side of reason, concerning the matters of money and of statics he calls his vision into life. Finally, when he faces reality that he is not a mystic, only thought he was, I demonstrate how he tries to change his life in order to receive the unity with God at least in his death.
