Abstract
This thesis examines the influence of external forces on the life of Tess d'Urberville and the people who are related to her. I will prove that the force that plays the most outstanding role in shaping her fate is heredity. Using the text of Hardy's novel and contemporary literary criticism I will demonstrate that the events of her life are governed by the fact that she is a descendant of the ancient d'Urberville family.
