Abstract

This thesis investigates the main relationships and the motivations of the characters in Emily Bronté's Wuthering Heights comparing with Henri-Pierre Roché's Jules et Jim. My hypothesis is to investigate the opposition between attraction and choice, natural desire and society, of which the latter supresedes the former. The first chapter looks back to some general background on this topic. It shows how the relationships of the main characters develop and gives examples of how the two novels resemble. It also explains why the choice fell on this particular topic to use for this research. The second chapter describes the research question and method. It also describes the Freudian divisions of the personality which explains why and how society can influence our choices. The third and the fourth chapter summarise the relationship between attractions and choices and the different aspects of attraction in order to show the power of society over our natural desire. It draws a parallel between the Freudian interpretation and the novels, which supports the greatness of Wuthering Heights as well as my hypothesis.
