Abstract
India officially became the colony of Great Britain from the beginning of the 19th century. After the colonial period, Indians managed to regain their long-awaited independence in 1947. Though the British Raj ended, its long standing reign can still be felt. An interesting aspect ofthis topic is the contradiction ofthe colonistic oppression which nevertheless helped the unification of India. In my thesis I will focus on the significance of English language in this procedure.
