Abstract

My thesis is about the comparison of the pupils' knowledge about the Present Simple, the Present Continuous Tenses and the articles in two fifth classes. One class is in Békés, in the Szegedi Kis István Reformed Secondary and Primary School and the another one is in Kupuszina, in the József Attila Primary School. The second primary school is in a minority village in Vajdaság. I wanted to see the differences between the two classes' knowledge about the Present Simple and the Present Continuous Tenses because I think that the Hungarian minority pupils do not know English as well as the Hungarian pupils because of the given circumstances. These will be discussed in the first part of my thesis. I examined pupils' knowledge empirically. I have compiled a test, which included three types of grammatical exercises about the Present Simple, the Present Continuous and the articles and in the last part I asked them to write five sentences about themselves to see if they can use the tenses correctly. There was no any standard for the test I have compiled but I used the books of the two classes to make the test, taking into consideration what they have already learnt. For assessing the pupils' knowledge I have read the syllabuses and compared their coursebooks. My aim was to discover and show what the reasons for the differences between the two fifth graders' knowledge about the tenses were. The results of the tests will shore up my statement that the different circumstances are responsible for the students' different knowledge.
