Abstract

In this thesis the short story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway has been examined from the protagonist's point of view. According to my understanding Jig, the protagonist, has an emotional awakening and there is a certain change in her life that forces her to recognise herself, realise her situation and decide according to all these themes. Different works of the literary critics and concepts are applied here such as nature and symbolism (fertility vs. infertility), the iceberg theory, the legend of the white elephants, the allegory of Plato's cave and in some cases feminist criticism (Luce Irigaray, Kaja Silverman). The ironical tone of the short story also helps the analysis. At the end of this thesis another short story by Hemingway "Cat in the Rain" is briefly introduced. Since the short stories are very similar in some major aspects it is necessary to mention it and later on this might be the continuation of the analysis as well. All in all, Jig turns out to have a complex personality who undergoes the process of development and has an emotional awakening. This way she might be a good example for every woman and her character surely gives strength to female readers to have their own emotional awakenings as well.
