Abstract

In my thesis I intend to give a comparative analysis of the character of Fitzwilliam Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen, and the character of Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones 's Diary written by Helen Fielding, concentrating on the differences of the two heroes and highlighting their dissimilarity. In my paper I present the connections of the two novels, I give a character analysis of Fitzwilliam Darcy, then I show the similarities and differences of the two novels (where we will see that there are many differences within the superficial similarities). Finally a character analysis of Mark Darcy leads us to the conclusion that the similarities between the two heroes are only sketchy. My conclusion is that although the two Darcys seem to be similar, this similarity is only superficial. It is true that they have the same name, both of them are rich, they are the heroes of the novels and on top of everything else Colin Firth embodied both Darcys in the film adaptations. But there are more differences between the two heroes than likenesses. My thesis reveals how different they are.
