English title

This thesis examines some different ways of explaining English grammar to Hungarian students through the Verbal Phrase as a problematic area by using the Grammar Translation Method which is not very common these days and considered to be a very oldfashioned method. I will try to prove that the base of a strong knowledge of a foreign language is still the knowledge ofthe rules ofthe language first but there is no need to over explain certain grammatical problems. Most of the grammar should be regarded as facts and not as something to be explained in a very detailed form. Ifwe don’t make the language teaching and learning too abstract of a science then we can be more successful in achieving at least a basic knowledge which is hopeMly practical knowledge as well. In Hungary the tendency is that more and more students study some foreign language but hardly anybody can actually use it. I am certain that there is some other way ofexplaining, English grammar even to less talented students in order to make them understand more of it but most ofall be able to use it.
