Abstract

I wrote this thesis because I want to make people sensitive to the issues of minorities. The first part deals with the problems and their origin. The next step in my thesis is about understanding difference and discrimination by looking at our culture and identity and handling the images we have from others carefully. In the second part I wrote about the importance of positive approach to difference. In this part I describe the two possible ways of intercultural education: formal intercultural education in schools and informal intercultural education outside school. In connection with formal education here I express the importance of language teachers as facilitators to deal with the problem of minorities. But not only the personality of the facilitator is important but also that working with people must be a continuous process. In the first place people should imagine themselves from the outside and should understand the world they live in. In the second place people should see difference positively and to favour positive attitudes, values and behaviour. In the last part I wrote about the issues that the facilitator should be aware of. If a facilitator decides to lead a group and use different kind of activities in this topic he/she should be competent in leading discussions and coping with conflicts and properly. Another important thing is that he/she should know the importance of evaluation and reviewing. At the end of the thesis an appendix is placed with examples of different activities to show it in practice.
