Abstract

The following chapters, which are closely connected and ensued from each other, deal with one of the most important battle of the Civil War; the Battle of Gettysburg. In the first chapter I prove — putting the events in chronological order — why became this particular battle the turning point of the American Civil War. The second and the third chapter are based on the reflection that history is a flow of events that are related to and result from each other. Consequently, if the Battle of the Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War, it was also the turning point of the history of the United States and even the turning point of the whole world's history. In the second chapter I set out from an imaginary situation: What would have happend if the Confederacy had won at Gettysburg? In all probability, it would have enabled the South to win the war, which would have ment the preservation of slavery and the split of the country. Though it is emphasized that it would not have been beneficiary for the further development of the States, for it would not have been able to become one of the world's most powerful nations. It would not have such a farreaching influence on the world's affairs. This presumption is a starting point of the third chapter, which deals with the importance of the U.S.A. and it's influence on the world's major historical events, or rather with the changes that the absence of this influence and interference would have brought in the scene of the history.
