Abstract

The topic of this diploma work is the development of the education of women in the United States from the seventeenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. This work is aimed to show how the changes in the life of the society, made it possible for women to join public education in all three educational level (that is primary, secondary and higher education). The beginnings of the institutional education in America dates back to the 1620s, when the first Puritan colonies were established. By 1900 education was common for both men and women, and women were about to join big state universities. This interval of time meant great development for women in respect of education. The first part gives a background of the concept of women in Europe and America, treats the development of the circumstances which meant an obstacle for women to be educated equally as men. It also describes the general concepts of American education through the period. The second part treats the development of women's education in three big sections. These sections are separated from each other by the two most significant events of the American history: the War of Independence and the Civil War. These events meant big changes in the life of the society and so did in the education of women. The sections describe the concepts in the society which caused development in women's education and the process of change itself. The process is illustrated with concrete examples. The conclusion shows the connections between the circumstances of American society and the changes in women's education throughout the period. It also gives some reference to the future development of women's education.
