Abstract

To interpret the cycle of the Holy Grail and that of the stories of King Arthur and the Round Table, the area in which they were born shall be analysed. The knightly idea is going to be discussed, along with the medieval centuries to understand the origin of the legends. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Britain was reached by English, Saxon and Gothic people, who met some resistance of the local Celtic tribes. One of their main enemies was King Arthur, whose fame increased during the centuries. In some works, Arthur is portrayed simply as a warlord, but in many other stories he is a famous king of considerable wealth and reputation, who rules the whole of Britain and frequently possesses sufficient military resources. His battles and other activities are going to be discussed. The thesis deals with Nennius' Historia Britonum from the early ninth, Annales Cambriae from the tenth, Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae from the twelfth and Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur from the fifteenth century. The character of Merlin, the Magician, who was the notorious druidic advisor to King Arthur is also important to understand. In the thesis the ideas of Glastonbury as the ancient and mysterious Isle of Avalon and of Winchester as the traditional Camelot is observed and rejected. Various possibilities of the origin of the Holy Grail and real objects for it is also part of the work.
