Abstract

In this thesis I would like to show the inventions which led to the discovery of movie, the first experimenters and the most important directors and their films of the period as I think they had the biggest role in the creation of film art. I will prove that until D.W. Griffith no film art existed, although the early directors thought that as they discovered this new kind of art, they became the expert of the film, but this is not true. We can only talk about significant films since Griffith, but the early directors were significant from another point of view: they prepared the way for the `real' directors. We will see that as real film art started the directors' independence was over, the producers and studios began to determine everything connected to films.
