Abstract
When we learn a language we learn how to communicate with people. We can do it orally and in writing. In my thesis I will concentrate on the latter as people frequently have to communicate in writing. In spite of the fact that it has a bad reputation in many schools, I will prove that writing can be a very interesting, valuable and involving activity for students; it helps them learn. As my school takes part in an international programme and we have an opportunity to communicate with American and Ukrainian English language learners, I will demonstrate that the writing process can be authentic and creative. Moreover, it improves the speaking abilities because it will be much easier to speak about topics being written down. Learners find it particularly encouraging when someone reads what they have written and in turn responds to it. Additionally, writing to pen pals contributes to the friendship of nations; children learn to appreciate different cultures, opinions, and attitudes; it increases their cultural awareness, causes them to develop a deeper and more mature view on different matters and it can shape their personality as well. In my work I will present different techniques in teaching writing in a communicative way with the help of the international programme mentioned above. Particular emphasis will be laid on exchanging letters and using the Internet.
