Abstract

This thesis examines the symbols of God and Christ in the religious poetry of John Donne. By theological and biblical references to these symbols I will demonstrate that Donne turned to the medieval scholastic philosophers for stylistic inspiration, borrowing from them the terminology and the difficulty of their style of argument. He was not interested in transcendence as an exact philosophy in itself but for his ownpersonal existence and redemption. The tenets of Faith expressed in well-crafted verse were influenced by his mixed religious background. My analysis concentrates on Donne's Holy Sonnets and divine poems themselves, trying to explain their conceits. The sources on this subject are limited, so I reliedon my own interpretation and mostly on my previous acquaintance with theology.
