Abstract

This thesis deals with the state-concept of the European Union in comparison with the United States. I intend to prove that the EU answers not only the different descriptions of a 'state', but also the criteria of a 'federal system', supplemented with the examination of the separation of powers. Using the recent publications about the European Union and the United States in relation with these topics, I am going to give a detailed answer to the question, whether the EU can be considered as a 'United States of Europe.
