Abstract

In my work I am going to reveal the five major concerns of Cummings' work: perception, recognition, feeling and thinking. Then, I examine the poetic techniques Cummings devised to realise his aesthetic theory and analyse some of his poems to demonstrate these techniques. Beyond demonstrating the relationship between Cummings' theory and practice, I hope to enlarge Cummings' reputation as an aesthetician. If Cummings can be seen as having striven for a coherent and unified system of aesthetics, then his poetic inventions fall into place as the means through which he realised his aesthetics and expressed his themes. Finally, I would like to quote Cummings' words about his own poetry that describe his message for his readers: "So far as I am concerned, poetry and every other art was and is and forever will be strictly and distinctly a question of individuality. . . If poetry is your goal, you've got to forget all about punishments and all about rewards and all about styled obligations and duties and responsibilities etceteras ad infinitum and remember one thing only: that it's you - nobody else - who determine your destiny and decide your fate."
