Abstract

In the 12th century Henry II, the king of England, resolved on strengthening the central government. His intentions met with several obstacles; inter alia he had troubles with the church. When Henry appointed his friend, the former chancellor Thomas Becket to be archbishop he found his equal. Thomas Becket's death was inevitable regarding the two strong characters, their motives and interests with the background of the medieval English society.
