Abstract
This thesis examines the use of Cooperative Learning strategies in the ESL classroom. The paper suggests that CL provides a possible way to enrich traditional language learning lessons. The first part of the thesis examines the necessity of change based on the results of a survey among ESL teachers. Secondly, the background to CL will be briefly outlined. The purpose of this study is to prove that students benefit from using CL strategies since these provide a motivating, supporting, comunicative and rich learning context. In order to do this, students will be observed during a CL unit on the topic 'Holiday and Travelling'. Students' response to CL and the observations will be analysed.
