Abstract
In my thesis I am going to deal with the question of culture in primary English language teaching. I intend to prove that culture plays an essential role in language acquisition and cultural information contributes to the success of English language teaching. Without information about the geography, inhabitants, history, ways of life, behaviour, customs and traditions of the target language country the students will fail to be competent users of the target language. Furthermore, the culture can serve as a valuable means to motivate children and arouse their interests in the target language. I am going to rely on the opinions of well-known experts and language methodologists to introduce this theme. At the first part of the thesis I am going to highlight the connection between language and culture. Then I am going to relate culture to language teaching. Within this part of the thesis I am going to examine the possibilities and ways of incorporating culture in the lessons, and the problems which may occur while teaching it. Finally, as a reinforcement of my hypothesis I am going to introduce a research that reveals language teachers' present attitudes towards culture in English language teaching.
