Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to analyse what journalistic, grammatical and cultural items advanced students of the English language need to know in order to understand the real meaning of English newspaper headlines. In the first part of the thesis I will introduce a curriculum consisting of three parts which students need to study to better comprehend headlines in English. These areas are the basic principles of journalism relating to headlines, grammatical aspects of headlines, and cultural references which may be present in headlines. The second part of the thesis is a teaching unit that will show the reader how the curriculum could be taught, which is essential to understanding a headline. To analyse headline language I studied headline samples taken from two British daily newspapers, namely The Times and The Guardian. As both newspapers are quality papers I found their use of language quite valuable for study and for taking examples from.
