Abstract
The present paper is concerned with the interpretation problems of Ámerican Psychq a novel by Bret Easton Ellis contemporary American author. I am going to investigate the possible causes of the scandalous, controversial reception of the novel and going to demonstrate that the unusual content (including graphic violence and pornography) and narration structure (minimalist characteristics) mutually contributed to the above mentioned phenomenon. I intend to place' strong emphasis on the role of different media used, how they affect the structure of main themes, motifs and narration throughout the novel. I am also going to prove with the help of reception aesthetic researches that the indignation of readers is due to the fact that traditional interpretation norm and strategies are no longer applicable to contemporary novels like this, and the reception problems of this work reveal the interpretation struggle of readers.
