Abstract

Language learning is a complex process. Teaching a foreign language involves not only grammar and vocabulary teaching but also teaching about the target culture. My aim with this thesis is to show how intercultural language learning takes place in lower primary classes. In the first chapter I will describe the theoretical background of the intercultural aspect of language teaching. In the second chapter I will outline the conditions in which the projects were carried out. The characteristics of the age group influenced the choice of topics the students investigated order to get an insight into their own and into the target culture. I devoted one chapter to each topic we dealt with in the classroom, namely: Chocolate Brands, The Map of Britain, School Life, and Breakfast Habits. I would like to prove that intercultural awareness can be established at the early phase of the language learning.
