Abstract

In my thesis I examine two of Hardy's novels The Return of the Native / 1878 / and Tess of the d'Urbervilles / 1891 / . I intend to take a closer look at the two female characters / Eustacia Vye and Tess Durbeyfield / in order to prove that despite their apparent difference in character and outlook, there are many common features in their personalities and in their fates. I would like to carry it out by giving detailed comparative analyses of their characters and their relationship with the most important male figures of their lives. As the presence of Nature and the Heath is extremely essential in all of Hardy's novels / The Return of the Native and Tess of the d'Urbervilles are no exceptions at all /, I will underline its importance in the heroines' characterizations, since it plays a determinant role in both Eustacia's and Tess's life. By the analysis of their characters I would like to represent their sufferings as well, through which I try to interpret Hardy's sombre view of life. I also intend to cast light up on the fact that despite Hardy's dark vision of life and despite the heroines' tragic death the novels do not end on a note of pessimism.
