Abstract
This thesis examines the evolution ofjazz. I will demonstrate the historical background of jazz; furthermore, what events black people’s music had to go through while it merged into jazz. I will prove that, in spite of the fact that the original roots ofjazz can be found in Africa, jazz is considered America’s music because of some significant events and musicians without whom jazz would not be as it is now. I will focus on the period from the late 19th century until the 1930’s.
