Abstract
This thesis examines the symbols of nature, colours and objects around the main characters in Tess of the d'Urbervilles of Thomas Hardy. Its interpreters emphasize the tragedy and changes in the characters in the novel, they look for the cause of the tragedy. I would like to prove that Nature, the surroundings are very important. No interpretation can be complete without investigating the environment and objects in the background of the characters. Firstly, I'll examine the definition of the symbol and a few of the scientists who were interested in investigating the universal meaning of the symbols. In the second part of my thesis, I will demonstrate my argument by using lots of examples from the novel and I will group these from different points of view using dictionaries about symbols.
