Abstract
This thesis examines the history and importance of Levi's jeans in popular culture. I will write how they were invented and what were their necessity as well as how did they become one of the major symbols of the United States of America. Using historical facts and a quite rare and valuable book compiled by Levi's historians which was given to me by the Hungarian employees of Levi's, I will prove that during the 20th century Levi's jeans became more than ordinary clothing items. The book is "The official history of the Levi's brand" with a lot of information, pictures, hardly seen old advertisements and customer letters containing anecdotes about their clothing in relation with everyday life. According to the company, as far as they know, there are only 2 copies of this book in Hungary. I have been an editor of two collections of links on the Internet, related to the topic (www.levistrauss.webmania.hu, www.vintage.lap.hu), for two years so I have collected a part of my sources from the World Wide Web as well.
