Abstract

This thesis examines the language teaching policy of the European Union and the situation of foreign language teaching and learning in Hungary. The benefits of speaking foreign languages are unquestionable in the European Union. I try to prove that Hungary's assessment to the European Union may encourage the Hungarian citizens to learn foreign languages. Using the help of statistics I try to demonstrate that the number of foreign language speakers in Hungary has been increasing over the last decade and this process might only strengthen with Hungary being a member of the European Union.
