Abstract

This thesis examines a coursebook via its vocabulary teaching techniques. Here we ask whether the book's vocabulary teaching methods are sufficient to teach vocabulary to young learners so that they will not forget what they learn. I will show through a study that the vocabulary teaching methods of Project 1 are not satisfactory from this viewpoint. My hypothesis is that Project 1 is a good coursebook, but it has weak points such as vocabulary and grammar. Here, I will just focus on the vocabulary aspect. I will also offer some reasons why students forget almost 40% of the words they learn. Afterwards I will make some recommendations about how students can retain more of their learned vocabulary, and how a book like the one examined here can be used more effectively in teaching vocabulary to young learners.
