Abstract

The aim of this study is to prove that the Suez crisis was a disaster and an important external psychological shock for the British. Only after Suez they became aware of that their great power position was lost which had been started before Suez as well. I will focus on the origin of the intervention of Suez and demonstrate that it was a conspiracy among the French, the Israelis and the British against Nasser, because the nationalisation of the Suez Canal was unacceptable for them on account of different interests. Using modern historical investigations, researches from that period I will examine the historical background of the Suez crisis why the Canal was so important for the British. I try to prove that Sir Anthony Eden who was the Prime Minister at that time wanted to keep the role of the British in the intervention secret until his death preserving his political position.
