Abstract
In this thesis, I provide an analysis of Angela Carter’s works based on their depiction of vampires. My paper is composed of Carter’s short stories “The Loves of Lady Purple” (1988) and “The Lady of the House of Love” (1993). My analysis is based on Julia Kristeva’s and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytical notions, the uncanny and the abject. First, I include a background chapter on Carter’s life and writing style, then I provide brief descriptions of the traditional vampire figure according to Auerbach (1995) and Gelder (1994) and gothic fiction according to Punter (2014) and Botting (1996). Next, I introduce Carter’s demythologizing project, according to her essay “Notes from the Front Line” (1983). My last chapter consists of the analysis of the vampire figures in the two short stories by Carter. My analysis of Carter’s works demonstrates that through her female vampire figures, argues against the imposition of gender roles and of sexualities by patriarchal societies. I describe that Carter explores the potential of abjection of the vampire and the subversive potential of a gothic representation of life experiences to question and subvert in her works patriarchal ideologies concerning the issues of sexuality and gender. I assume in my paper that the depiction of some supernatural characters in gothic fiction written by women writers reflects the issues of sexuality and gender concerning women in the 1970s and 1980s.
