Abstract

Since food has always been presented in films, it is important to acknowledge its significance to a movie. Due to its ordinariness, food is capable to serve as a common communicative ground within and between cultures. Therefore, food is not only present to elevate films aesthetically, but it provides a further level of meaning. Food is often used in films as a sign system that helps to convey certain messages, express cultural belonging, create and recreate cultural norms and cultural identity. Individuals are the main social actors who establish and maintain cultures; hence individuals are also important components to the question of food, film and culture. The aim of this paper is to elaborate on food as a national and transnational messenger in post-2000 American films, more precisely, Chocolat (2001), Julie and Julia (2009) and The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014) as these film productions not only reflect on usage of food in contemporary film culture, but they also deal with cultural encounters and identity formation.
