Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of literature on the language use of bilingual children; however, the number of studies analysing this phenomenon in case of bilingual siblings have been fewer. This paper examines the language use of two bilingual siblings, Mathieu and Lillian who speak French and Hungarian. The thesis analyses their speech according to the application of different parental strategies by Lanza (2001) and identifies the causes of code-switching in their interactions with their mother and native speakers of Hungarian. In addition, the paper also investigates how different factors such as their birth order or their gender affect their language development. Moreover, the recorded utterances of Mathieu and Lillian are examined for the French impacts in their Hungarian speech as well. It is concluded that the presence of the mother strongly influences their speech production and their language development in Hungarian. Furthermore, the case of these two children does not support the language development theories proposed about the role of gender, while birth order does seem to have an effect.
