Abstract

In my diploma work I covered the following topics to give an account of the French presence in America, their conflict with the Anglo-Americans and the end of their empire: The first part of my work serves as an introduction which introduces the topic to the reader. In the second chapter, entitled Espablishing the French Empire in North America, the footsteps of Verrazano, Cartiers, Champlain, Joliet, Marquette and La Salle are followed. How they expanded the first French settlement Port Royal into the vast domain of New France and Louisiana. It also includes the development of the fur trade and the French and Indian relationship. In the third part, which title is The Opposing Powers a short account of the development of the Anglo-American colonies is given, concerning their political and economic structure. A brief comparison between the two, French and English colonies has also been made, viewing the population and some antecedents and reasons of the conflict between the two colonies. Besides this chapter includes the colonial wars more exactly the King William's War, the Queen Anne's War and the King George's War. In the last part of my diploma work, which is called the French and Indian War, those events are described which led to the French territorial loss in North America, following the chronological order of the events from the antecedents of the war till the Peace of Paris. A conclusion can be found in this chapter as well which gives some reasons for the French defeat and further consequences of it.
