Abstract

A broad picture of the possible influences that might have helped in the development of the genre such as the history of the age, the social changes that took place and the effect of the Gothic revival in architecture is given Fear is one of the oldest emotions that arises in the human mind. Therefore elements that create fear have been present in literature in various forms since ancient times. Shakespeare and the Graveyard poets were the most influential above all. Gothic novel boomed for sixty years and during this period large numbers of works have been added towards the genre. However only a few of them remained known for the later centuries. Since under the title "Gothic" many different kind of literary works are gathered the similarities of the various types are highlighted to show their Gothic features. The similarities of the works mostly lie in the commonly used "atmosphere-creating elements", themes and motives. Gothic genre is not only important for its own sake but for the effect it has had on the succeeding literary and movie works.
