Abstract

This thesis is about the history of the Chinese people in British Columbia, Canada from the 1850's up until the present time. Canada "the chosen land" has been enriched by one of the most diverse cultures in the world brought there by the Chinese immigrants. The history of the Chinese in Canada reflects the sacrifices and hardships that led to the birth of vibrant communities in Gam San or "Gold Mountain, or "Red Hair" as they called this country. The history of the Chinese-Canadians began with the hard work, commitment and perseverance of the early settlers, most of whom originated from Guangdong, the coastal province of China. They left their country due to financial hardships as well as political and social problems that occurred in China between 1787 and 1850. They first went to North America in 1848 for the California Gold Rush, however, due to the growing Anti-Chinese feelings and the spreading of the news of gold in the Fraser River Valley in Canada, most of them fled to British Columbia. The Chinese-Canadians experienced a long history of racial discrimination in Canada as signs of the White Canadians' protest against their presence in forms of riots, such as the famous Vancouver Riot on 7 thSeptember in 1907, discriminatory immigration policies, racial hostility and segregation. In 1941 Canada joined the allied countries, which marked a significant change in the attitudes of the White Canadians towards the Chinese-Canadians, that is hardships and racial prejudices got less intense. In the 1960's, Vancouver (Wan-Go-Wa, or VanHong) changed a lot thanks to the arrival of the New Immigrants, who differed from the earlier Chinese settlers. Nowadays, Chinese form a significant part of the City of Vancouver living inside and outside Chinatown. They have several organizations, newspapers, community centers, etc., which all help to focus on keeping their community together, and assist their people in various ways. The Chinese have been present in Canada for over a century. Their community grew from its simplicity into a significant force that helped to shape Canada's multicultural identity.
