Abstract

Slaves were exposed to cruelty and they were treated as properties throughout the centuries. In this thesis, I will examine the reason why slavery was doomed as an institution and the historical necessity that led to the abolition of the institution. I will also cover briefly the events that slaves did to escape from bondage in order to have a better life with equal civil rights. Using secondary sources, I will demonstrate the cause that called forth the outbreak of the Civil War and the laws, which were enacted to abolish slavery and make slaves legally free.
