Abstract

The thesis focuses on the construction of railroads and the birth of the first transcontinental railroad during the 19 thcentury. First itgives a clear view on the transportation before the arrival of the rails. Then it introduces the first constructions to the reader and guides him through different experimental stages towards the birth of the first transcontinental railroad. The thesis gives a view on what affect the rails had on industry and agriculture and how it spurred the urbanization. It demonstrates how the rails became a unifying force on mass culture.
