Abstract

This thesis investigates the Salem witch crisis in the late 17 thcentury.I willprove that one of the two opposing political factions, the Putnams, took advantage of the outbreak of the witchcraft craze in order to sweep away their political and personal enemies. Using original documents about the affairs of Salem Village and its residents, eyewitness accounts, records of the trials, and also historical writings on that period, I will demonstrate that, besides the belief in supernatural phenomena, other factors played a crucial role in the accusations of a great many people of witchcraft.
