Abstract
This thesis attempts to examine the basic developments of North Sea oil from the beginnings until the early 1980s. The point of this thesis is to highlight the difficulties with the adverse circumstances of Northern oil-fields, and to prove that the slow development of these fields was due to the poor economic situation of Britain and the difficulties with the natural circumstances. My method to prove my statement is the following. Firstly, I will review the general background of northern oil-fields and analyse the positive and negative expectations that were made soon after the discoveries of these oil-fields. Secondly, I will review the economic situation of Britain from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Finally I will analyse the two major difficulties, which influenced the process of development in the oil sector, namely the issue of technology and financial matters.
