Abstract

This thesis examines the military and strategic importance of Colchester from 600 BC until AD1350. My aim is to prove that by 1350 Colchester lost its military importance because since then Colchester Castle was mainly used as a prison and as no attack was to be expected medieval Colchester was already founded on the cloth trade. I will demonstrate Colchester 's and Colchester Castle's importance from the Celts on, through the Romans and the Anglo-Saxon England and the Norman Conquest until 1350.
